"The mayor and board of aldermen called a meeting Monday morning based on an incident at the police department where a uniformed officer was allegedly assaulted," said city attorney Dudley Williams.
According to Williams, APD officer Jason Franks was allegedly assaulted by Chief Henry Randle on Friday evening.
"Based on the allegation, the mayor and the board prudently voted to shift the investigation to an independent third party. Since the Monroe County Sheriff's Office has dual jurisdiction over Aberdeen and the county, the board thought his office would be the appropriate agency appointed for this matter," Williams said.
According to a city official, the next regular-called meeting of the board of alderman meeting is Oct. 16, but this matter will be addressed beforehand if the investigation is complete.
"We don't know what went on, but we're looking into it," Cantrell said.
