CHICKASAW COUNTY - The deadline to qualify for municipal office was Friday, March 6 and several positions around the county are contested.
In Houston, the position of Alderman Ward 1 was left vacant at the passing of Tommy Griffin. Two candidates, Scott Shempert (D) and Tony Uhiren (R), are seeking the post. The position is currently filled by Griffin's son, Gary "Boo" Griffin, who was appointed to fill the term.
City Marshall of Houston will see five names on the ballot including incumbent Billy Voyles and former Marshall Kevin Davis. Also on the ballot are Robert Ivy, Mike Doss and Heath Hollingsworth. All five are running as democrats but will force the primary.
In Okolona, five contenders are vying for the position of Mayor with incumbent Sherman Carouthers (D) facing Willie Frank Williams (D), Louise Cole (D), Harold Spratt (I) and George Jenkins (I). The division in party affiliation will necessitate a primary election.
In the Town of Woodland, all incumbents are running unopposed with the exception of Rev. Hudson, who opted not to run this term. Rita Lynn Weaver has entered the race in his position but is also unopposed.
Primary elections by party affiliation will be held on May 5.
Run-off elections, if necessary, will be held on May 19. General election will be held on June 2.
