"One of the great things about this event is you don't know what you're going to get when you show up," said Amanda Foster, who is heading up the Food Fest this year. "We don't have a set menu, so there's a wide and interesting selection."
The Food Fest is Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Parish Hall at All Saints' Episcopal Church. Cash and checks, but no debit or credit cards, will be accepted.
The cooks, which include men, will have a variety of items for sale, such as frozen meat and vegetable casseroles, chicken and dressing, soups, stews, chilis, homemade sauces and smoked meats, as well as fresh baked breads, cakes, pies, cookies and candies.
Once again, the group will be emphasizing tailgating items this year, like smoked pork tenderloin and chicken, an array of dips, black-eyed pea salsa, cheese balls and tortilla roll-ups.
"And we're going to have the fresh grill again with racks of ribs for sale," Foster said.
They'll also be offering copies of the church cookbook, "Cooking with the Saints," and aprons for sale, as well as T-shirts with the official Food Fest logo on them.
"The logo is something new," Foster said. "We've never had one in the past, but we're hoping in the future people will see it and associate us with it."
In 2011, the women raised $7,600 at the food festival, said Cathy Fitzpatrick, the group's treasurer.
In the past, she said, proceeds have gone to a variety of community and outreach programs, such as Haiti relief, the Tree of Life clinic, the American Cancer Society, the Walk for Epilepsy, the Honduras Medical Mission, camp scholarships, Sanctuary Hospice House and Smithville tornado victims. They've also given money to Saints' Brew, which offers a free breakfast at the church Monday through Friday to anyone who is hungry.
