TUPELO – A Belmont woman has been charged in connection with an alleged murder-for-hire scheme.

Mary Elizabeth Newman, 35, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Tupelo and accused of conspiracy to commit murder.

She was taken into custody by Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agents and held at the Lee County Adult Jail. Officials from the MBI allege she sought to hire a hit man to have her husband killed.

Newman's bond was set at $1 million during an initial appearance in Lee County Justice Court.
