TUPELO – A Belmont woman is accused of being involved in a murder-for-hire scheme.

Mary Elizabeth Newman, 35, of Belmont, on Wednesday was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

She was taken into custody in Tupelo by Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Agents and was held at the Lee County-Tupelo Adult Jail on Thursday. Officials from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation allege she hired a hit-man to have her husband killed.

Newman’s bond was set at $1 million.
