Jazz artists Brian “Breeze” Cayolle and Michael Jefry Stevens will perform as a part of the Link Centre’s Monthly Music Mix concert series. To make the show extra special, the audience can sit right on stage with the artists during the show, for an intimate performance.
The guys may come from different backgrounds, but they both speak jazz.
“He comes from generations of New Orleans musicians. He’s got that history,” Stevens said in a phone interview with the Daily Journal. “I come from New York, so I have that history. We were able to find common ground: we both love pretty melodies and all the old songs.”
Cayolle and Stevens had long careers in music before meeting just a few years ago.
Cayolle’s a master of woodwind instruments, especially sax and clarinet. He has his own band, the French Quarter Allstars.
Stevens has been playing jazz for more than 40 years and has collaborated with a number of musicians, and has performed all over the world.
It was weather that brought the two world-renowned musicians together.
“I was living in Memphis, and he was in New Orleans. But after Hurricane Katrina, he ended up in Memphis. So we’ve been playing together for five or six years, when we can,” he said.
The pair have recorded a CD that will be released in the coming months, so the tunes featured on that will fill much of their set list at the Tupelo gig.
Fans at the Tupelo show won’t go away empty-handed, though, as the guys’ other albums will be for sale.
