Advice: “You have to do what you know and I knew this.”

George Partlow started Hunter’s Haven 25 years ago in a 400-square-foot space his dad gave him in a family building.

“I told him what I wanted to do and he laughed at me,” said Partlow, who had been working with his dad’s construction business. “I was 30 then, and my back was giving out on me. I didn’t see how I could do it much longer.”

He expanded slowly and did much of the building’s construction work himself. Now, Hunter’s Haven is in a 14,000-square-foot store off Cliff Gookin Boulevard.

The store sells guns, ammunition, bows, archery accessories, men’s hunting apparel, Costa Del Mar sunglasses, Lacrosse boots, fishing tackle, Yeti coolers and equipment for hunting deer, turkey, duck, hogs and other animals.

“We’re definitely hunters serving hunters,” Partlow said. “If it’s good, we keep it. If it’s a gimmick, we get rid of it.”

Hunter’s Haven also buys and trades guns. Plus, it offers 90-day layaway and in-store financing.
