ABERDEEN — Aberdeen police chief Henry Randy is asking residents to sign a petition calling on the city to keep his job an elected one.

The board of aldermen voted 3-2 on Nov. 20 to change the city's charter to appoint the police chief.

Randle tells WTVA-TV in Tupelo that such questions should be decided by voters.

City clerk Jackie Benson says the change to the town's special charter will be sent to the secretary of state's office and the governor's office before it comes back to Aberdeen.

Other proposed changes to the charter include nineteenth century language which refers to slavery.

Benson says the entire process should take about three to four months to complete.
