TUPELO – Jewel DeShong-Dale, 84, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Traceway Retirement Community under the care of Hospice Advantage. A Tupelo native and lifelong resident, she was born Oct. 24, 1928, to Clifford and Troy Sarah Forbes Grissom. She was a graduate of Tupelo High School, and began working at age 13 at Woolworths and later worked for Tupelo Hardware. During her 48-year career with Hancock Textile Company, she worked a number of years as L.D. Hancock’s personal secretary and later as credit manager. She was jokingly known by many in the inner circles of Hancock Fabrics for helping Mr. Hancock keep the first dollar he ever made. She served on the Lee County Associate Board of The Peoples Bank & Trust Co. Jewel was an active member of Harrisburg Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for over 58 years and also taught in the children’s Sunday School department.
Services will be noon today, Nov. 29, 2012, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. David Langerfeld officiating. A private graveside service will be led by the Rev. Paul Stephens at Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include her daughter, Judith DeShong of Tupelo; her sister, Dot Heatherly (Roe) of Springville, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, “Son” DeShong; and her second husband, Dr. Bob Dale Sr.

Rev. James Threlfall
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Rev. James Albert Threlfall, D.D., 91, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012. Born in Newburg, Mo., he was the son of the late George Hughey and Florence Miller Threlfall of Amory. He graduated from Amory High School in 1939 and was co-captain of the football team. He later attended Bob Jones University.
He is survived by two daughters, Dianne Rutherford (Ron) of Greenville, S.C., and Susan Ottavi (Neil) of Thompson’s Station, Tenn.; three sons, David Threlfall (Sheila) of Plano, Texas, Doug Threlfall (Barbara) of Seoul, South Korea, and Jim Threlfall of Indianapolis, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jessie Threlfall of Clemmons, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Currey Threlfall; two brothers, Henry and William; two sisters, Mary and Bessie; and his parents.
Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, in Greenville, S.C. Burial will be in Graceland East in Simpsonville, S.C.

SHERMAN – Kerry Rena Seawright, 34, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She was a former employee of the Tupelo Buffalo Park. She enjoyed spending time with her family and children, and taking care of her cat, Frisky. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, mud riding, the outdoors and helping others.

POTTS CAMP – Mamie Lee Whaley, 82, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at the home of David and Joyce Whaley in Potts Camp. She was born Dec. 31, 1929, in Ashland to James Ottis Orman and Ruth Brown Orman. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church.

CALEDONIA – Robert O. Ball-Cook, 85, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. He was born Aug. 10, 1927, to Orville Washington Ball and Jennie Marguerite Shook in East Alton, Ill. He lived in Lowndes County for the past 11 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy as Chief Aviation Petty Officer. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Services with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Bro. Dennis Sullivan officiating. Burial will be Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Gainesville, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Claytina D. NETTLETON – Opal Savely Flurry, 95, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 12, 1917, in Lee County to Andrew and Gladys Smith Savely. She was a native of Smithville, but had lived in Nettleton for the past 62 years. She was a former farmer and business owner of several stores in Nettleton. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She enjoyed going fishing and working in her vegetable and flower gardens.

He was a retired lift truck mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and the commander of VFW Post 5395 for 10 years. He loved having a big time.

SALTILLO – Jamie Ray Ellis, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Sept. 30, 1947, in Tupelo to Durward and Doris Ellis. A Vietnam veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970 and served in the National Guard Reserve. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner and loved trying to help Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 842 in Tupelo. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, refinishing old furniture, golfing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was the constituent liaison for Sen. Roger Wicker’s office in Tupelo and was very devoted to his job, helping all veterans who had served. He was a member of Saltillo United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Tim Green officiating. W. E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
