Vann Hall, Scott Hall and east Bond Hall will be torn down over four months, beginning late this month, The Hattiesburg American reported.
Demolition will be staggered to avoid closing roads, said the university's assistant director for projects, David Bounds.
Black & Gold Boulevard will be blocked off during construction for the three-building, 950-bed community. That's a long way away. Bounds says it is still being designed. The university hopes to have part of it open by fall 2014.
"We are working feverishly. This is not a slow process," said Bounds. "We're treating it as a high-priority issue for this institution."
The College Board approved the project about 2 ½ years ago. Up to $55 million in state bonds has been approved.
The largest residential community in school history will form a corridor with its sibling, the 850-bed Century Park North on the opposite side of West Fourth Street.
