The Oxford Eagle reports that city planner Tim Akers has told officials that in the past few months nearly a quarter of a million passengers have ridden on Oxford University Transit buses.
The system hauled its first 86 passengers in October of 2009.
Akers says funding came from local contributions, the Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration.
The facility is being built on four acres. It will have 5,300 square feet of maintenance space and 1,505 square feet of office space with the capability of doubling in size in the future.
The builder has 240 days to complete the project.
