TUPELO -- Hank Boerner, director of North Mississippi Medical Center's Wellness Center and a community leader and activist, died today at NMMC after entering the hospital Wednesday.

Boerner was co-chair of the Mayor's Healthy City Task Force and Tupelo Mayor Jack Reed Jr. said in a statement that "he was one of the finest men I've ever known ... the epitome of The Tupelo Spirit." In his healthy task force capacity, Reed said, "He has been leading our transformation into a place where our children and adults can lead healthier, more productive lives."

Boerner is survived by his wife Helen and two children. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
