TUPELO – It sounded more like recess than a gathering of teachers Wednesday when retired educators of the Tupelo Public School District met to enjoy finger foods and fellowship at the Hancock Leadership Center.

“This a huge turnout considering news mainly traveled by word of mouth,” said Kay Bishop, director of communications for the district.

Bishop said there was no agenda for the meet and greet, allowing teachers to come and go as they pleased. However, school Superintendent Gearl Loden said its focus was gathering contact information for retired district staff and teachers.

“We’re planning on creating a newsletter for them to keep them informed on what’s going on in the district,” he said.

Bishop said the district planned to get its retirees to stay involved as proctors and guests on occasions like reading days.

For former and present staff alike, the luncheon was a meeting of old friends and an introduction to new ones.

“It’s great to put a face on the current leaders of the district,” said retired librarian Donna Loden. “This is such a testament to the system’s heart for its educators.”

Bob Monroe, who retired in 2010 after serving Tupelo schools for 30 years, said it was great to still be included.

“It’s wonderful to be in this room. I wouldn’t be surprised if more people came next year,” he said.
