Center Wendell Lewis, the team’s lone senior, will be miss at least eight weeks because of a fractured patella in his right knee. He injured the knee during non-contact drills on Wednesday, and an MRI revealed the extent of the damage on Friday.
He’ll have surgery Monday.
Lewis is the fourth Bulldog on the shelf due to injury. Starting guard Jalen Steele has missed the last six games with a broken wrist and might not return until next month. Freshman guards DeAndre Applewhite and Jacoby Davis are out for the season with ACL injuries.
The loss of the 6-foot-9 Lewis puts a big dent in MSU’s post attack. He scored 36 points over the last two games and is averaging 8.1 per game to go with 4.9 rebounds.
MSU is down to six healthy scholarship players for today’s game at Loyola-Chicago.
