Mississippi State’s Gavin Ware was named the SEC freshman of the week this morning, the league office announced.
Ware, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound forward from Starkville, earned the honor for his effort in a 79-72 win over Central Arkansas on Saturday. He scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, both career highs, en route to his first double-double. Ware hit 8 of 9 field goal attempts.
On the season, Ware is averaging 9.0 points and 7.1 rebounds while making 53.5 percent of his shots, and he’s become a key player as injuries wrack the MSU roster. Ware has started the last five games for State (4-6), which is off until a home game against Alabama A&M on Dec. 30.
