The Mississippi Prison Agricultural Enterprises produces rice, wheat, soybeans, broccoli, mustard and turnip greens and corn. There's also a poultry facility with a capacity for 36,000 hens.
Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps says in the fiscal year that ended June 30, about 2,090 tons of vegetables were grown on 1,258 acres. About 1,400 tons of that went to feed inmates.
The hen operation produces 476,804 dozen eggs valued at $483,331.
MPAE also operates a 25-acre blueberry farm at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Greene County. Inmates harvested more than 21 tons of blueberries.
