SALTILLO – Residents could have the opportunity to vote on creating a 1 percent tax to pay for improvement projects.

Saltillo’s board of aldermen on Wednesday gave its OK to a Mississippi Municipal League measure that the entity will bring before the state legislature this upcoming session.

If the bill passes the legislature as presented, cities will be able to hold a referendum to increase sales tax by up to 1 percent.

The tax increase can only go into affect with a 60 percent vote from city residents. As soon as the project the city levied the tax for is completed, the tax increase will be automatically removed from the books.

Currently cities have to bring a local and private bill before the state legislature to raise sales taxes to fund projects.
