Instead of focusing on finding the answers, The Clarion-Ledger reports (http://on.thec-l.com/VXRf84 ) they will focus on the process for solving problems during a summer program through the University of Mississippi's Center for Math and Science Education. They will work in groups, debate and complete hands-on activities instead of completing worksheets alone.
The teachers' training will mirror the way students in Mississippi and across the country will learn math as states implement a new set of academic standards known as Common Core.
The center's project is called Developing Excellence in Education through Professional Learning Communities and is funded by a newly awarded, three-year, $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
