Athlon Sports took a look at all the first-year college football coaches and it’s no surprise that Urban Meyer of unbeaten (12-0) Ohio State was No. 1 on their list with an A plus grade.
Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin, whose Aggies went 11-2 behind Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, was No. 2 with an A-plus. Penn State’s Bill O’Brien was third with an A-plus.
Hugh Freeze, who guided Ole Miss to a 7-6 finish, was fourth with an A-minus.
Justin Fuente of Memphis got an A-minus after a 4-8 campaign and was No. 6 on the list.
Others of note: No. 11 Gus Malzahn (B), 10-3 Arkansas State; No. 14 Paul Chryst (C), 6-7 Pittsburgh; No. 27 John L. Smith (F), 4-8 Arkansas; No. 28 Ellis Johnson (F), 0-12 Southern Miss.
