TUPELO – Ward 1 City Councilman Markel Whittington will seek a second term on the Tupelo council.

Whittington, a 63-year-old local business owner, filed qualifying papers for the Republican nomination for the north central ward this week. He had considered a run to replace Mayor Jack Reed Jr., who is not seeking re-election.

“I just didn’t want to give up my business interests at this time,” Whittington said. “I still think we need some good, strong-minded business people on the council.”

Whittington was the only candidate to file qualifying papers with the Tupelo City Clerk this week. No other candidates have filed to run in Ward 1. The Daily Journal will update Tupelo city council qualifiers weekly.
