INGOMAR - As the Biggersville Lions battled with the Coldwater Cougars in the third quarter Friday, a down-to-the-wire contest was certainly in the offing.

Then the Lions went cold.

Coldwater outscored Biggersville 27-7 the final 11 minutes of the contest to claim a 75-55 victory, and the Class 1A North Tournament championship.

“Coldwater came ready to play, and we looked sluggish,” Biggersville coach Cliff Little said. “If we played our best, I don’t know if we could beat them.”

Biggersville (26-7) advances to the 1A State Tournament as the No. 2 seed from the north, playing its semifinal contest Friday at 2:30 p.m. against South No. 1 seed West Lincoln.

But the Lions had the top seed in their sights at one point in this contest.

Coldwater (22-3) led 19-13 after the first quarter, and 36-30 at halftime.

Biggersville began the third period with a 6-0 run on baskets by Daniel Simmons and Emmanuel Simmons. The Lions even grabbed the lead twice, the second and last time on a Daniel Simmons drive and basket in the lane at 41-40.

Later in the period, a Jaylon Gaines outside shot tied the score at 48-48 with 3 minutes, 3 seconds to play in the third. Then the bottom fell out.

On baskets by Brian Polk and Earlando Blair, Coldwater closed the quarter on an 8-2 run for a 58-50 lead.

After a Marcus Watson free throw in the fourth quarter for Biggersville, Coldwater went on a 12-0 run. Biggersville did not hit a field goal until 30 seconds remained.

Blair led Coldwater with 18 points, while Gains and Daniel Simmons each scored 17 for Biggersville.
