Mayor Bill Williams tells WTVA-TV in Tupelo that the hearing will allow local residents and community leaders to voice their opinions on the issue.
Local resident Gernarro Cole says it is a health issue and one of courtesy to others.
Williams says he sees it as coming down to property rights. He says a person who has some property should be allowed to decide what goes on in that property as long as it is something that is legal. He says smoking is legal.
Several towns across Mississippi have banned in government owned buildings. Others have also banned it in public areas such as restaurants.
