JACKSON — Six candidates are running in Tuesday's special election to fill a seat in the Mississippi House.

House District 36 encompasses parts of Clay, Lowndes and Monroe counties. The seat was left vacant by the Jan. 13 death of Democratic Rep. David Gibbs, who had served since 1993.

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If nobody wins a majority on March 12, there will be an April 2 runoff. Candidates in special elections run without party labels.

The winner will serve through the current four-year term, which ends in January 2016.

The candidates are Roderick Van Daniel, Jimmy Davidson, Bobbie C. Davis, Karl Gibbs, Eddie Longstreet and Jeannie Johnson Staten.
