“We’ve got beautiful sets, beautiful costumes and a lighted carriage,” said Tupelo Ballet director Sharon Long. “It’s ‘Cinderella’ with a twist.”
Part of that twist is the addition of seasonal fairies, but the classic “Cinderella” tale is still there: A young woman is hidden away by her evil stepmother and stepsisters, only to later find her Prince Charming, thanks to her Fairy Godmother, a glass slipper and a bit of magic.
Cassidy Pitts, 18, plays an evil stepsister, and Ericka Sherrill, 17, is Cinderella’s stepmother.
“We’re annoying to Cinderella,” Pitts said. “We bring the comedy to the show.”
Sherrill said they’re having fun in their roles.
“We’re the comic relief, and we’re the parts the kids will enjoy the most,” she said.
Zoe Windham, 16, is the graceful Fairy Godmother, complete with a sparkly gold costume.
“I bring all the magic to the show,” she said. “It’s really fun.”
“Cinderella” definitely has a different tone than “The Nutcracker,” which the Ballet presents each Christmas.
Still, there’s plenty of magic in both.
“This is the exact opposite of ‘Nutracker,’ but I love it,” Pitts said. “It’s so much fun.”
