TUPELO – At least three Tupelo Police Department employees are under investigation internally for alleged actions stemming from a weekend traffic stop.

Tupelo Police Chief Tony Carleton confirmed the investigation Thursday but said he will not discuss the case because the investigation is ongoing.

“I’m not at liberty to talk about the case,” he said. “We have an internal affairs officer and we are dealing with something in-house.”

When questions about officer conduct arise, Carleton said, they are addressed internally and immediately.

The Daily Journal began asking questions after a call from the public about an alleged incident.

The chief would not confirm specific details about the traffic stop or the nature of the internal investigation but said it was department-driven and doesn’t stem from any outside complaints.

Carleton said he will have more to say once the internal investigation is complete.

“We just have to go from there, let it run its course,” he said.

He also said no one has been fired as a result of the investigation.
