Houston Nutt doesn't ordinarily do civic club talks, so it was a big surprise when he showed up at the Tupelo Kiwanis meeting at the Summit Center on Friday.

"When he walked in the door, I was shocked," said Mark Prince, responsible for the day's program. Prince had lined up Chyna Ward, program coordinator for Ole Miss football, to address the club.

But Nutt, the second-year Rebel head coach, told the Kiwanians he saw that Ward was swamped with work on the first day of spring practice (update, Page 4B), so he told her he'd cover for her. "I said, 'We'll go to Tupelo,' " and he and strength coach Don Decker made the trip.

"We got a special treat," Prince said.

Nutt entertained the Kiwanians with stories of how the Rebels developed unity and confidence last season, and said he had a warning to his players about early predictions of a possible Top 10 season for the Rebels: "Don't believe it."
