Speedsters beware! If you are thinking about cutting through Shady Lane off Highway 15 North, you could be paying a fine.
Residents on the street signed a petition requesting speed bumps on the road to slow people down.
Pontotoc Police Chief Larry Poole told the board of aldermen last Tuesday at their regular board meeting that he had just been made aware of the problem and he has ordered radar to be run on that street.
"It is a short street and people are using it as a through street from the highway, and they are traveling through there too fast. The families with small children there are wanting speed bumps to slow the traffic down."
Aldermen ordered Poole to run radar in the area before taking final action on speed bumps.
In other business, aldermen voted to purchase a D.O. probe system with variable speed drive for a total of $21,000 installed.
This system will save the city thousands of dollars in electricity at the waste water treatment plant by allowing certain parts of the plant to only work when it is needed, rather than on a timer system.
The board voted to allow the city to take over maintenance only of the lift station located on Hope Circle, in the Habitat for Humanity subdivision.
Karen Laprade was given permission to attend certification class April 16 and 17 in Oxford, and they granted Southern Motion a 10 year tax exemption.
The board also voted to pay Columbia Gulf, $87,000 for the remainder of the installation of the regulator station near the Toyota site to be reimbursed by the PUL alliance.
The $500 donation, which was budgeted at the beginning of the year, was given to Nickey Browning for the American Legion baseball.
Aldermen gave Police Chief Larry Poole permission to apply for the COPS grant for two new officers.
Poole said the grant is 100 percent for three years and the city is obligated to pay for the fourth year.
"If it is granted we can get them free for three years and we will truly need them by the fourth year."
Chief Poole was approved to attend the chiefs training conference in Biloxi in June, Joe Didonna will attend CTS Flash Bang Certification course in May and Shad Long and Greg Bedford will attend the S.T.O.R.M. Conference in Vicksburg May 4-7.

Fire Chief Phil Stokes addressed the Ecru Board of Aldermen last Tuesday night requesting permission to purchase several pieces of equipment needed by the fire department. The board authorized the purchase of all the equipment, which totaled $1,176.69.
Mayor Tom Todd reported that Tupelo Police Department recently donated a retired police car to the town. "It's a '96 model, and even if we have to scrap it we can use it for parts," he said.
Following up on a request made by the board at a previous meeting, James Akins gave an estimate of $277,000 for sidewalk repair within the town. The estimate was requested in hopes that money will become available for such purposes through the stimulus package. Although it was decided to table the matter unless funds become available, Alderman Bill Nance suggested that the town check into the cost of removing the existing sidewalks that are in need of repair.
In other action for the evening, the older model Ford Ranger truck from the water and sewer department was declared surplus, and it was agreed to advertise for bids on it.
A proclamation concerning the 2010 census was issued, and Mayor Todd was authorized to select a committee chairman to oversee the upcoming census.
Bonnie Todd was appointed to the Election Commission, and a building permit was issued for McCoy's Grocery. After brief discussion concerning a building permit request from Greg Robbins, it was found to be an invalid application, and no action was taken.
A donation for $250 was approved for the county-wide Clean Sweep project coming up on April 25, and $150 was earmarked for the Pontotoc Progress to place an ad in the "Welcome Home" publication.
Finally, Police Chief Randy Wilson was authorized to attend a conference in Biloxi, and Judge David Hall was approved to attend the Municipal Judges Conference in Philadelphia.

The Algoma Board of Aldermen passed a resolution to hire Kendall King to temporarily replace Officer Brad Owen while Owen attends police academy fulltime beginning April 19.
Among other business, the board:
* Passed a resolution to apply for a $450,000 CDBG Public Facilities grant for street work;
* Discussed plans to replace traffic signs and street signs in the town;
* Discussed plans for the Fire Department fundraiser on May 2 when political candidates will be speaking.
"We also will be selling barbecue and chicken plates, followed by an auction," said Algoma Mayor Harry Corcer.
