One entrant, Jeff Moon of Shannon, is fulfilling a dream of competing in the world's most prestigious marathon. Moon, 45, is running in Boston for the first time.
"It's the one everybody wants to run in," he said. "It's the granddaddy of them all."
Moon and eight other Northeast Mississippians will challenge Heartbreak Hill in the Patriots' Day race.
Also in the field, according to registration information at the race's Web site: Bret Beauchamp, Oxford; Jimmy Calvary, Booneville; Scott Chancellor, Oxford; Kim Cofer, Tupelo; Bobby Holley, Corinth; W. Tom McCabe, Corinth; Jodi Roberts, Starkville; and Kenneth Williams, Corinth.
To run in the Boston Marathon, runners must beat qualifying times on certified marathon courses. The times are based on age and gender.
"You have to earn your way there," Moon said. "I guess that's what makes it so special."
