JACKSON — Mississippi lawmakers said last month that by increasing the cigarette tax, they had headed off a big increase in the price of car tags.

They might have spoken too soon because the car tag issue is still unresolved.

Legislation that added 50 cents a pack to cigarettes said $27 million would be put into a car-tag reduction fund, but only if a separate spending bill passed during the 2009 regular session.

The regular session ended at midnight Thursday — without an overall state budget and without the earmark for car tags.

Gov. Haley Barbour will call a special session this month for the budget. Lawmakers are hoping they'll get to consider putting money toward keeping down the price of tag renewal.
