TUPELO - The Tupelo Farmer's Market will participate for the first time this year in Farmers Market Week, sponsored by the National Farmers Market Coalition.

The kickoff will be Saturday at the market in downtown Tupelo on Spring Street. A tent will feature items and menus from downtown retail businesses and restaurants.

As usual, farmers will be there selling fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, plants and homemade canned goods. The market opens at 6 a.m.

The first issue of "Get Downtown 1st," an electronic newsletter produced by the Tupelo Downtown Main Street Association, will also be unveiled Saturday.

"We are so excited about our farmer's market," said Megan McCarty, marketing and public relations specialist for the Main Street association. "It really draws people downtown."

Events will continue throughout the week and will culminate Saturday, Aug. 8, at the market, where chef David Leathers will demonstrate watermelon carving.
