STARKVILLE — The first of two public hearings on Sunday alcohol sales in Starkville will take place this week at city hall.

The hearing is scheduled during the Board of Aldermen's regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. A second hearing is scheduled to take place during the board's next meeting Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Businesses and restaurants cannot sell alcohol on Sunday, according to the city's existing alcohol ordinance.

Several city aldermen are against the hearings, saying they oppose Sunday alcohol sales because it is a moral, religious and safety issue.

Proponents of Sunday alcohol sales say it will encourage more restaurants and businesses to set up shop in Starkville, and will give the city a progressive image.
