CHEROKEE – An Iuka woman was pronounced dead at the scene after a train struck the car in which she was a passenger on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Tishomingo County News.

Shandra Lynn Lomenick, 35, was in a 2002 Ford Focus driven by 40-year-old Glen “Hotdog” Brown at the Mill Creek Loop crossing just east of the Mississippi-Alabama state line when it was hit by an eastbound Norfolk Southern train, the report said.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the incident in which witnesses said the car attempted to drive around crossing arms that were lowered to block traffic crossing the railroad.

No information was available about Brown, who was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Huntsville, Ala., with head trauma.
