Tyler Long, 12, of Vardaman is in a Memphis hospital after a Monday afternoon traffic collision.

According to Trooper Brian Mobley, the Starkville patrol district's public affairs officer, Long was riding his green Honda four-wheeler up an embankment along Highway 341 South about 5 p.m. Monday.

As he reached the top of the bank and the highway, he collided with a 1984 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by M.L. Chandler, 24, of Pheba.

Long suffered severe damage, especially to a leg, and was airlifted to LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis for treatment.

Chandler was arrested and charged with driving without a license and not carrying liability insurance, as well as having an expired inspection sticker. Chandler was released on bond Monday evening.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.

Long is the son of Angela Long and the late Michael Long.
