OXFORD — A man charged in the shooting deaths of a Lafayette County father and son has asked a judge for $16,000 to hire a private investigator to help in his defense.

Caleb Carrothers has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the July deaths of Frank Clark and his son, Taylor, and one count of attempted murder for the shooting of Tonya Clark.

Carrothers is being held at the county jail without bond. His case is expected to be presented to a grand jury in September. No trial date has been set.

In his request, Carrothers' public defenders contend since the man may face a death sentence if convicted, his defense requires the services of an independent investigator to prepare for trial.
