Lafayette is ranked third in the Daily Journal’s large schools’ rankings, while the Indians are ranked fourth.
This regular-season match-up could previw a postseason matchup in November.
The Commodores, who play in Division 2-4A, are 3-0 on the young season after beating crosstown rival Oxford, 31-21, on Friday.
Out of Division 1-4A, IAHS is 2-0 after beating up on Tupelo, 35-13. Coach Jamie Mitchell and Co. have looked impressive so far, allowing only 20 points and scoring at least 35 in both games.
But Mitchell knows full well that his team can’t sit back and enjoy the win over Class 6A Tupelo.
“He (Mitchell) said that was a big step for us, but we got a bigger one next week,” said IAHS quarterback Maikhail Miller.
Other teams coming off big wins that can’t afford to be complacent this week are Pontotoc, Ripley and Saltillo.
Pontotoc, which beat the Journal’s previous No. 1 Class 3A team, Aberdeen, 24-14 on Friday, will host another 3A power, Ripley, this week.
Undefeated Saltillo (3-0) will host the new No. 1 in 3A, Booneville, after shutting out Baldwyn 9-0.
On the road, Tupelo will be looking for its first win of the season against another solid 4A opponent, Louisville. The Wave is 0-2 after playing New Hope and Itawamba AHS.
