The new system, announced Wednesday, will use the state Personnel Board and troopers from neighboring states to decide promotions instead of relying on Mississippi troopers grading their own colleagues.
NAACP state President Derrick Johnson said Thursday that since then, he's talked to several black troopers who are concerned Department of Public Safety Col. Michael Berthay still will control the final decisions.
Berthay's removal is the No. 1 item on a list of changes recommended by a mostly black group of troopers.
The Mississippi Central State Troopers' Coalition has alleged discrimination in DPS hiring and promotion.
