HOUSTON – Alleged swindler Allen Stanford fell ill during a hearing Wednesday when the judge denied the U.S. government’s motion to set a trial date.

Stanford is being held in solitary confinement in a federal jail.

He and other top executives of Stanford Financial Group are accused of masterminding a $7.2 billion Ponzi scheme.

Hospitalized twice since his June 19 arrest, Stanford began spitting blood into tissues and a cup during the hearing, a condition his attorney described as a persistent and undiagnosed.

He looked gaunt, reports stated, and his face bore faint bruising left over from injuries in a prison brawl last month while detained in a Conroe facility. He was moved to Houston soon after.

“It’s just harassment,” the lawyer told reporters after the hearing. “They are trying to break him down.”
