A student at Tupelo Middle School was suspended this morning after school administrators found an unloaded handgun in the student’s backpack.

The handgun was not displayed, it wasn't seen by any other student on campus and no student’s safety was directly threatened, according to a statement released by Superintendent Randy Shaver.

The handgun was discovered around 8:15 in the morning.

In accordance with district policy, the student was immediately suspended and turned over to local law enforcement authorities.
