JACKSON — Dr. Ed Thompson, longtime head of the Mississippi Department of Health, has died after a long battle with cancer.

A spokesman at the health agency on Tuesday confirmed Thompson’s death. He was 62.

Thompson served two stints as state health officer, first from 1993 to 2002.

His latest began in 2007 after working at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for three years.
