BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The deputy superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools has withdrawn from the running for superintendent of Birmingham City Schools.

Birmingham school board member April Williams tells The Birmingham News that Kathy Augustine cited personal reasons. Augustine was one of five finalists to be interviewed by the board Saturday morning.

The other four candidates are: Frederick Hill, assistant superintendent for Tupelo Public Schools; Deborah Horn, a professor at Miles College and former superintendent of Bessemer city schools; Craig Witherspoon, superintendent for Edgecombe County Public Schools in Tarboro, N.C.; Valva Lee, assistant superintendent of Clayton County Public Schools in Jonesboro, Ga.
