MSU senior center Jarvis Varnado is among 31 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award, given annually to the nation’s top college basketball player.

The 6-foot-9 Varnado was averaging 14.1 points and an SEC-leading 10.8 rebounds per game entering Monday night’s contest at Western Kentucky. He’s also making 5.1 blocks per game and is just 71 blocks away from becoming the NCAA’s career leader.

There are 31 finalists because of the uncertain status of injured Ohio State swingman Evan Turner.

The Wooden winner will be announced April 9 in Los Angeles.
