TUPELO - The first Lee County grand jury of 2010 convened Monday and will continue its work across the next two weeks.

The panel will examine criminal cases brought by the District Attorney's office, as well as other responsibilities, in preparation for a February term of circuit court.

A spokesman said to expect a heavier-than-usual criminal case-load to come from the grand jury.

Sheriff Jim Johnson said Tuesday he also expects more indictments than usual, noting several criminal cases have multiple defendants, which swells the caseload.
