Big push by Augustus

- Junior forward Kodi Augustus led the Bulldogs with 15 points. He was 6-for-12 from the floor and played 21 minutes.

Augustus was key in helping the Bulldogs rally from their first 14-point deficit, getting six points in a span of 47 seconds after Vanderbilt had taken a 48-34 lead on a transition 3-pointer from Jermaine Beal at the 17:38 mark of the second half.

Countdown to history

- Jarvis Varnado’s nine blocked shots gives him 115 for the season, second in the nation, and 509 for his career.

Varnado is now 26 blocks shy of tying former Louisiana-Monroe big man Wojciech Mydra, who collected 535 blocks from 1998-2002.

Varnado is currently second all-time in the NCAA record book.

Varnado also had 14 rebounds, passing Wiley Peck for the third spot on the MSU career rebounds list.

Stewart chasing Wilson

- By simply stepping on the floor, Varnado and Barry Stewart tied Derrick Zimmerman’s school record of 127 games played.

Both players are natives of Tennessee, and Stewart’s two 3-pointers leaves him 14 3-pointers shy of Darryl Wilson’s school-record 258. Stewart began the night with 40 made 3-point baskets in 111 (36 percent) for the season.

Quotable

- “It’s never easy when you come up here, and this is one of the better Vanderbilt teams that I’ve seen in a long time. Everybody understands this building and knows how tough it is.” – MSU coach Rick Stansbury.
