JACKSON — Tineshia Evans and Shakara Edwards each scored 20 points and Newton survived a wild finish to beat New Site 77-73 on Thursday night in the Mississippi Class 2A girls state championship.

New Site (31-2) took its first lead since the opening minute when Krystal Jackson made a made a three-point play with 4:21 left. Jackson, who finished with 29 points, fouled out with 2 minutes remaining and Newton leading 69-66.

New Site crept within two points three times in the final minute but could get no closer. Trailing 75-72 with 17 seconds left, New Site's Bree Harris was fouled before she was able to get a shot off. She made one of two free throws to pull New Site within 75-73. Newton's Edwards was fouled on the next possession and sank both free throws to seal the win.

Ashtin McNichols added 17 points for Newton (31-3). Darrah Pharr had 16 for New Site, which shot 50 percent.
