Not only is he the best defensive player in the SEC, Mississippi State senior Jarvis Varnado is the best in the country.

That's according to The Sporting News, which on Tuesday named the 6-foot-9 center its Defensive Player of the Year. Varnado earned the top defensive honor from the SEC's coaches on Monday.

Varnado is the NCAA's all-time blocks leader, with 542 heading into this weekend's SEC Tournament. He's currently second in the nation in blocked shots this season, with 4.8 per game.

The Bulldogs open SEC tourney play Friday against either Auburn or Florida.
