Mississippi State standout sprinter Tavaris Tate was named SEC Freshman of the Week after his outstanding 400-meter dash performance this past weekend at the Alabama Relays.

A native of Starkville, Tate ran 44.86 seconds en route to setting an Alabama Relays meet and MSU freshman record. His remarkable time is currently ranked No. 1 in the world, and 2nd on MSU’s all-time performance list.

The SEC honor is a first for Tate who won a gold medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships March 14 as a member of the Team USA 4x400-meter relay.
