Charles Williamson, 27, was pronounced dead Monday in front of the Copper Kettle, about two blocks south of the downtown square on Memphis Street.
Michael Newson, also known as James Jones, 25, is charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
“We sent him to prison as James Jones, and then we found out he uses a bunch of aliases,” said Sgt. Elijah Wilson, a detective with the Holly Springs Police Department. Newson’s previous imprisonment was for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana, Wilson said.
Both the victim and the suspect are from Holly Springs, and witnesses said they were arguing before three shots were fired.
A Marshall County deputy sheriff reportedly witnessed the killing as he drove by and was able to lead other law enforcement officers to a quick apprehension of the suspect.
Newson remains in the Marshall County Jail pending a bond hearing scheduled for Thursday.
