JACKSON— The Mississippi House on Saturday passed a bill to ban public funding of abortions under health exchanges that will be created under a new federal law.

An opponent blocked the immediate release of the bill, so the House returns to the Capitol on Wednesday to remove that procedural block and send the bill to Gov. Haley Barbour.

Mississippi already has a law that bans public funding of elective abortions. Opponents say the current proposal is designed only to curry favor with conservative political groups.

Supporters say they want Mississippi to specify that no state or federal money could pay for elective abortions once all provisions of a federal health overhaul become law by 2014.
