Although at first glance this appears to be a lake, it is actually a field in the Tippah River Bottom area near Ashland. Flood waters filled fields, pastures and yards in the area during Saturday and Sunday's storms. (Joyce Brock)
ASHLAND - Ashland Fire Department has become a center of activity following the destruction left behind the tornadoes that swept through Northeast Mississippi over the weekend. Multiple emergency management and assistance agencies have set up their temporary centers of operation at the fire department.

Outside the building, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency's Mobile Operations Unit is surrounded by multiple MEMA vehicles. Inside, the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Division has information available. Rural Development Specialist Pamela W. Thompson will be working from the fire department until further notice.

The USDA is offering housing assistance to victims of the storm, as well as others who are in need. Some of the services they offer include assistance with housing, repairs and utilities. Those in the area who may benefit from their services are encouraged to stop by the fire department or the Benton County Justice Complex. Agents will be surveying damages in the surrounding areas this week; if no one is available at the fire department, assistance may be attained by calling the Corinth office. That number is 662-287-7223, extension 4.
