Such vendors are especially unwelcome in the downtown business area, but several officials have said they wish to control the problem with outlawing the hotdog cart that has served late-night customers for years near the Square.
"The language we've presented is that transient vendors would have to be located in general business areas and not the central business district, but allowing transient vendors if they are small food vendors," Akers said. "Of course they would have to have a business license and the permission of the landowner. We would regulate this by ... defining the maximum size that could be allowed in the downtown business district. That would preclude the bigger trailers."
Aldermen will hold a public hearing on the proposed ordinance on May 18.
